Open Lecture Series

The curators of the Open Lecture Series by the Faculty of Architecture of the Estonian Academy of Arts invite world-renowned architects, theoreticians, critics and urbanists to Tallinn to present new perspectives on architecture, design, urban planning and critical thought. The aim of the curators is to introduce the wide spectrum of spatial issues in all their diversity from fashion design to urban planning, from architecture to product design. The open lectures take place every other week on Thursdays at Kanuti Guild Hall, they are always free and conducted in English.

The target audience of the open lectures is divided into three. First and foremost, the lectures are meant for the academic audience related with spatial culture including students and lecturers of the Estonian Academy of Arts as well as other universities, thus urging them to dwell deeper on their research and consider their professional work in the international context. In addition to their presentation, the lecturers also participate in one of the faculty’s speciality studio courses providing valuable feedback to student works as external experts. A consistent part of the lecture audience also includes practising architects who consider this as an opportunity to keep their finger on the pulse with the latest knowledge and activities of top professionals. The third important target audience includes the wider public interested in spatial culture whose awareness of the architectural world is further enhanced by in-depth interviews with the lecturers published over the year in local professional journals as well as daily and weekly newspapers.

The Department of Architecture and Urban Design of the Estonian Academy of Arts has organised the Open Lecture Series since 2012 with architect Veronika Valk-Siska curating the events in the first three years.
